On a very rainy Wednesday night at Papa Murphy’s Park, the Sacramento Republic FC battled Reno 1868 FC for the second straight time at home. Reno got the best of Sacramento in USL regular season action on Saturday night, handing the Republic their first home loss of the season by the final of 4-1. Wednesday night’s rematch had completely different stakes; round two of the US Open Cup with the winner advancing to the next round.
The rain did not let up the entire match and neither did the effort of both teams. Each had their fair share of chances, including what appeared to be an easy goal by Reno getting denied by one of the goal posts early in the second half. Sacramento would end up winning the match 1-0, thanks to a late goal from midfielder Sam Werner.
Werner found himself on the perfect end of an excellent low cross from former Stanford teammate Drew Skundrich:
Sacramento’s defense handled a late barrage of attacks from Reno, punching their ticket to the next round. The Republic have now eliminated Reno 1868 FC from the US Open Cup in three consecutive years.
Sacramento will host Fresno FC for round three action on May 29th.
