The Cleveland Indians have announced the upcoming removal of their Chief Wahoo logo from the team uniforms, according to the New York Times.
MLB confirms this news, saying the logo was “no longer appropriate for on-field use.”
Chief Wahoo first appeared on the team’s uniforms back in 1948.
Recently, Cleveland’s chairman and chief executive Paul Dolan has been one of those pushing to move the image out.
After years of debate, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement that the organization
“ultimately agreed with my position that the logo is no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball, and I appreciate Mr. Dolan’s acknowledgment that removing it from the on-field uniform by the start of the 2019 season is the right course.”
Chief Wahoo will still be available to fans through merchandising, but nothing with his likeness will appear on uniforms or MLB’s website.
Phillip Yenyo of the American Indian Movement of Ohio applauded the decision as “another step in the right direction” and has called out the Atlanta Braves to follow in Cleveland’s footsteps.
