My Issue with WWE Evolution

by Damien Barling

The title is misleading as I don’t really have an issue with WWE’s first all women’s PPV Evolution. What I do have an issue with is the way WWE chose to announce it.

I’m happy the company made a big deal about it though I’m concerned that on a night Stephanie McMahon stated what were once “30 second matches, became main events”, on a night where every WWE superstar that was given a microphone praised the women and the event, Raw saw fit to have 3 women’s matches that lasted a combined total of 2 minutes and 39 seconds. For those wondering, thats an average of 53 seconds per match.

And still, thats not my biggest issue. My biggest issue lies in the actual announcement. The fact that WWE seems to have forgotten the reason women in the company we’re looked at as “Divas” and eye-candy was because thats the way WWE chose to portray them.

I’m not sure if you realize this but WWE is an entertainment company. Characters are depicted the way the company decides. Meaning, the people in the ring making the announcement about the PPV are the same people who marginalized the woman’s role in the company for years. A decade. Closer to two decades.

I’m very much excited for this event and believe some of the most talented performers in the company are women, with Alexia Bliss perhaps being the most talented of them all, yet it’s hard for me to see passed the hypocrisy of the WWE in their praise of this concept.
