A shocking turn of events today as the Oakland Raiders have released Pro-Bowl and fan-favorite punter Marquette King.
King was signed by the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2012. King had the tough job of taking over for longtime Oakland punter Shane Lechler. In 80 games with the Raiders, King punted 426 times for an average of 46.8 yards (19,941 total yards). That includes 156 punts inside the 20 yard-line and only 33 touchbacks.
Other than his big boot, King’s on-field dancing, creative celebrations, and bright smile made him a favorite amongst Raider Nation.
The Raiders, just last year, signed King to a five-year, $16.5 million extension. His release will save the team around $2.9 million in cap space.
Oakland also announced today that they have released 2015 third round draft pick Clive Walford.
