After an underwhelming loss to now-4-6 Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, the Denver Broncos fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and promoted quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave to the position on an interim basis.

“I have a responsibility to do what’s best for our football team,” Broncos coach Vance Joseph said in a statement. “Although this wasn’t an easy decision, we needed to make this change. We have to play a more efficient brand of football offensively as we begin the final stretch of our season.

“Mike is an outstanding coach and a great person. He had a lot of opportunities this offseason, and he chose us. I have the utmost respect for Mike and wish him all the best in the future.”

McCoy, 45, has coached on three different teams. Beginning with the Carolina Panthers in 2000 as their offensive assistant, he stuck with the team until he was offered a job as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with Denver in 2009.

The San Diego Chargers hired him as a head coach, where he spent four seasons before being fired and rehired by the Broncos as the offensive coordinator.
