For the first time in each of their careers, Blake Treinen and Jed Lowrie took the field at Nationals Park Tuesday night as All-Stars. For the first time since 2015, the Oakland Athletics had two representatives in the All-Star Game.
“I was happy that we were able to do this together, and happy that we were on the field at the same time,” Lowrie said. “Something I’ll never forget the rest of my life.”
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Treinen made his All-Star Game debut with the American League up 2-1. The first batter Treinen faced was Reds first baseman Joey Votto. It only took four pitches to retire the six-time All-Star. Christian Yelich would follow with a ground-out to Lowire and Treinen would close the inning forcing Charlie Blackmon to fly out to left.
Three batters, eleven pitches, ten strikes, three outs. His sinker even hit the radar gun at 99 mph.
On the season, Treinen has appeared in forty games, accumulating 24 saves with a 0.94 ERA and a 3.91 SO/BB ratio.
Jed Lowrie and Phil Garner are the only two Athletics second basemen to play in an All-Star Game. Lowrie was inserted into the game in the sixth inning with Treinen. Lowire would finish the game batting 0-2 with a walk.
Going into the second half of the season, Lowrie is batting .285 with 16 home runs, which ties his career high.
