The Sacramento Kings on Thursday waived guard Frank Mason III.

Mason, 25, was due to make a fully guaranteed $1.62 million this season if he was on the roster beyond October 15. He was on the Kings’ Summer League roster, but didn’t play in any of the team’s three games in the California Classic.

Sacramento selected Mason out of Kansas with the No. 34 overall pick in the 2017 draft. He averaged 6.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 15.8 minutes per game across 90 games with the Kings. His role reduced significantly last season, and finding playing time this year was going to be even more difficult for the 5’10” point guard.

This could be good news for Yogi Ferrell who’s contract becomes fully guaranteed Thursday. It was extremely unlikely Sacramento was going to keep both players, and Mason’s release the day Ferrell’s contract becomes guaranteed is a sign that Ferrell will stay on the roster.

The Kings are down to 11 players with four spots to fill before the start of the season. Sacramento’s next game is Monday in Las Vegas against Team China.
