Surrounded by the sounds and smells of the 2019 California State Fair at Cal Expo, the Sacramento Republic FC took to the pitch at Papa Murphy’s Park for a rare, mid-season friendly match against Liga MX’s Club America U-20 team. A showcase of both club’s young, up-and-coming talent, Sacramento got the better of their guests, winning the night 2-0.
Most of the action from Tuesday’s match took place in the opening minutes, with Republic’s Ray Saari finding the back of the net in the sixth minute, after a number of deflections during a Sacramento corner kick.
Less than 10 minutes later, Sacramento put together a beautiful sequence of passing, resulting in the second and final goal of the match. Republic captain Cameron Iwasa found space on the wing, drawing the defense out of the box. Calm and collected, Iwasa bypassed the pressure with a smooth low cross that only Stefano Bonomo could reach, resulting in an easy score.
The match featured a handful of Republic academy players, many of whom making their Papa Murphy’s Park debut. Fans were pleased to see a solid crop of young talent waiting in the wings for the club, hoping to one day be part of the main roster.
The Republic return to USL action this weekend as they face Rio Grande Valley FC for a road match this Saturday.
