DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis senior quarterback Jake Maier earned Big Sky ROOT SPORTS Offensive Player of the Week honors for September 16, the league office announced Monday morning. This is his first of the 2019 season, and fourth of his decorated Aggie career.
The communication major from La Habra, California, completed 38 of 49 passes for a season-high 389 yards and four touchdown passes, despite playing only slightly more than three quarters of the Aggies’ 41-13 win over Lehigh Saturday. He fired TD strikes to Khris Vaughn twice, plus one each to Wes Preece and Carson Crawford as part of a 41-0 start. Maier’s final completion – a 23-yard score to Vaughn with 12:39 left in the fourth – also marked his 756th of his career. That moved him ahead of Randy Wright (2010-13) for the school record.
Maier’s 389-yard performance also brought him another UC Davis benchmark: it represented his 17th career game with 300-plus passing yards, tying the standard set by J.T. O’Sullivan from 1998-2001. Through Saturday’s win, Maier ranks third in school history in career passing yards, attempts and touchdowns. He needs totals of 279, 28 and three in those respective categories to move up to No. 2 in the Aggie record book.
Maier won Big Sky ROOT SPORTS weekly honors on both October 15 and November 19 of his junior season, while his first such award came on October 30 of his sophomore year.
UC Davis heads to the Peace Garden State to take on top-ranked North Dakota State this Saturday.
