UC Davis Win The Golden Horseshoe; Defeat Cal Poly 48-24.

DAVIS, Calif. – Junior sociology major Khris Vaughn and sophomore biochemistry and molecular biology major Ulonzo Gilliam, Jr. combined for four total touchdowns on Saturday afternoon to help No. 21 UC Davis cruise to a 48-24 win at home against Cal Poly.

The win improved UC Davis to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

Senior communication major Jake Maier led UC Davis’ passing attack with 378 yards through the air, tossing four touchdowns without throwing an interception.

Gilliam, Jr. totaled 152 yards to lead the Aggies’ ground attack and added one touchdown in the game, picking up 6.9 yards per carry along the way. Gilliam, Jr. also tacked on 43 receiving yards and one touchdown. Sophomore communication major Troy Spencer also tacked on 53 yards on the ground, picking up 5.3 yards per carry.

Maier’s most prolific target in the ballgame was Vaughn, who caught eight passes for 148 yards and two scores. Freshman Lance Babb II got in on the action in the passing game as well, hauling in three balls for 90 yards.

Freshman Nick Eaton showed out for the UC Davis defense, collecting seven tackles, 4.0 TFL, one sack, one forced fumble, and one recovered fumble. Sophomore human development major Devon King added 12 tackles and 2.0 TFL and junior managerial economics major Isaiah Thomas had two interceptions in the win.

UC Davis put up 48 points on eight different scoring plays. The Aggies got on the board first, taking the lead for good at 3-0 with 13:12 remaining in the first quarter. Senior communication major Max O’Rourke converted a chance from 31 yards out to cap a five-play, 61-yard scoring drive.

The Aggies then rode that lead to victory, increasing their advantage by 21 points along the way.

The Aggies won the turnover battle in Saturday’s game, forcing three turnovers while avoiding any giveaways, with UC Davis turning those takeaways into 14 points. UC Davis also had an outstanding day offensively, totaling 588 total yards, 194 on the ground and 394 through the air, while averaging 8.3 yards per play and out-gaining Cal Poly. The UC Davis offense did a good job prolonging drives, converting on 42.9 percent of third-down attempts.

The Aggies hassled the Cal Poly passing attack all game, piling up four sacks and pulling down two interceptions.

UC Davis’ offense took advantage of its visits to the red zone, scoring 27 points on six red zone appearances.

Next up for the Aggies is a matchup at Southern Utah, next Saturday’s kickoff from Cedar City, Utah, is set for 5:05 p.m. PT/6:05 p.m. MT.
