Match Recap: Sacramento Republic FC 2, RGV FC 1

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (August 11, 2018) — Sacramento Republic FC overcomes a first-minute goal against to defeat Rio Grande Valley FC 2-1 at home as Cameron Iwasa becomes the club’s all-time leading scorer.
The visitors opened the scoring just 30 seconds into the match. Aldo Quintanilla was able to play a through ball past the defense for Carlos Small. With Republic keeper Josh Cohen coming off his line, Small poked his shot past Cohen and into the corner of the net for the early lead.
Cohen had to make two acrobatic saves early on to keep Republic FC. Nicolas Perea rifled a left-footed shot to the top corner of the net in the fifth minute, but Cohen went airborne to block the shot away. Cohen stopped a dangerous counter attack in the 21st minute as he dove to get his hand on an attempt from Jose Enriquez.
Republic FC equalized in the 61st minute after enjoying a good spell of attacking possession. Elliott Hord received a short corner on the right wing before crossing a bending ball into the box. Iwasa was able to get on the end of it and redirect his header into the net. The goal moved Cameron Iwasa (27) alone atop the Sacramento Republic FC all-time scoring List, breaking a tie with club legend Rodrigo Lopez. It was also his 11th goal of the season, which is one strike away from matching his single-season record of 12.
Republic FC captain Jeremy Hall added the match winner in the 68th minute. Second-half substitute Keven Aleman curled a left-footed free kick from the left wing into the box. Hall elevated and sent his header bouncing into the six-yard box, headed for the far post. RGVFC keeper Tyler Deric stretched out to block the shot but could only get a fingertip on the header before it went into the net. The headed effort marked Jeremy Hall’s second goal of the 2018 USL campaign, both serving as match-winners. Republic FC grabbed all three points with the 2-1 home victory over RGVFC.
Sacramento travel to Saint Louis to take on Saint Louis FC on Wednesday before returning home next Saturday to take on LA Galaxy II.
