I learned a long time ago that if you can find something you love for work, it never feels like a job.

Being in sports radio and broadcasting for over 25 years and loving it, I can confirm this sentiment. I love what I do. On the list of things that I love in my life, way up near the top is play-by-play. I have had the pleasure of calling games at the high school level, college level and the professional sports level.

For me, a new challenge will begin with the NBA restart. I will have the opportunity to call the Sacramento Kings games on the radio off of a television.

Yes, that is right. The games are in Orlando, we are in Sacramento. The chance to call the games off the television monitor for the radio audience will be different but another part of the excitement of something new. That is a huge reason why I love sports and play-by-play so much. Every game is different. Some are not as memorable as others, but some become unforgettable.

Each game presents an opportunity for a different story. Does an athlete reach heights that appear unimaginable? Will you witness a team have a historic night? Maybe it is an iconic play, a heartbreaking loss, a thrilling victory. Sports elicit passion. A passion that is hard to replicate but thrilling to try and capture in play-by-play.

I love the preparation for the games. I love the story-telling element, the craft itself, the good, the bad and the ugly. It is all there in every game and in every broadcast. I have worked at it, I will continue to work at it and just want to be as good as I possibly can be. I feel so blessed to be in this position. Even though I have called over 70 Sacramento Kings games on the radio over the years, in many ways this feels different to me.

I can’t promise much besides this: Over the next 8 games, and hopefully more, I will give my best. I will be having the time of my life and will never take these opportunities for granted.

Here’s to the NBA returning and here’s to dreams becoming a reality, no matter how long they last.
