The Athletics sealed a series sweep of the Houston Astros on Sunday in a chippy affair that resulted in a bench-clearing brawl
Just a matter of days ago, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly was suspended for eight games after throwing at two members of the Houston Astros.
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred will have his hands full after a bench-clearing brawl that took place on Sunday afternoon between the Oakland Athletics and Houston Astros, an altercation that took place in the midst of the A’s ninth straight win.
A’s outfielder Ramon Laureano was drilled in the back by Astros reliever Humberto Castellanos in the bottom of the seventh-inning during at 7-2 Oakland win, causing a stir-up between the two division-rivals.
It was the third time during the three-game series that Laureano had been hit by a pitch, prompting the outfielder to exchange words with the Houston bench.
Astros hitting coach Alex Cintron was seen taunting Laureano, challenging the 26 year-old to make a move. Laureano complied, charging the dugout and causing the benches to clear.
It is unclear at this time how long the A’s will be without their center-fielder, but it’s likely that it will be at least a few games.
Athletics rookie Jesus Luzardo picked up the win in his second-career start, tossing 5.2 innings of two-run ball while striking out five Astros batters.
Matt Olson and Matt Chapman hit back-to-back home runs in the third-inning to give the A’s an early lead. Robbie Grossman homered in the second-inning, his second home run of the season.
Oakland’s nine-game winning streak puts them at 12-4 on the season with a five-game lead over the second-place Texas Rangers.
The A’s will be back in action on Monday night when they face the Los Angeles Angels. With a win, the Athletics would push their winning streak to 10-games.
