How do you explain this? Is it simply answered with the answer of “this is March?”

The NCAA tournament is only a few days old, but WOW! All of the eyes of the college basketball world are centered in on Indianapolis. This tournament has had upsets, close games, blowouts, a COVID cancellation and tons of madness.

Hey, this is March after all.

The reason behind some of this has to be the uncertainty of this past college basketball season. Some teams played more games, others had odd breaks due to covid, and quite frankly the seeding by the officials was probably off. Even with that said, the amount of double-digit seeds that won at least one game has made this tournament so much fun to watch.

Gonzaga came in as the heavy favorite and so far, so good for the Bulldogs. The same can’t be said for top seed Illinois, or 2nd seeds Iowa and Ohio State who are all from the Big 10. #3 seeds West Virginia and Texas are out and the last time the tournament was played Virginia won it all but this year the 4th seeded Cavaliers lost in the opening round.

So, what does all this chaos give us?

It gives us #15 seed Oral Roberts into the Sweet 16.

It gives us #8 Loyola of Chicago in the Sweet 16 just a few years removed from their Final Four run.

We have the West Coast with five teams in the Sweet 16 with four Pac-12 teams and Gonzaga.

This has given us all the things that we love with the tournament: upsets, blowouts, close games, and real drama in the one and done situation.

This year in sports has been far from perfect but this tournament reminds me once again why sports can be so much fun.
