SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

It Feels like Deja Vu; But it Shouldn’t

Can someone please wake me up? Am I dreaming? Are we in a time warp?

I know the last year has been unlike any other year we have experienced in our lifetime, but has it made the time stand still?

Is it not 2021?

If you are a fan of the San Francisco 49ers, this feels like the 2005 NFL Draft all over again, except it really shouldn’t. This is a team that just two seasons ago came inches short of winning the Super Bowl and being crowned the best team in the world.

This is a team who with a record number of injuries to numerous All-Pro’s, Pro Bowlers, starters and their back-ups, still finished with a 6-10 record–also while holding a spot in the middle of the NFC playoff picture mid-season.

This is a team who has the likes of Nick Bosa, George Kittle, Fred Warner, Trent Williams, Deebo Samuel and a plethora of other stars.

How could this possible feel like Deja Vu?

The 49ers are literally a stacked roster, there’s no doubt about it, this team is ready to win now. The one caveat in many peoples eyes that seems to be the thorn in the foot of this team is the quarterback.

Most feel the 49ers need an upgrade over their current starter Jimmy Garoppolo, and it seems the organization feels the same way. If you look at their actions this offseason with trading up to get the number three spot in the draft, in what many are calling a very talented and top heavy quarterback set of prospects shows just that: They want a long term upgrade.

This decision by the team has all too familiar feelings for fans like me of the team. It’s probably the biggest decision this team will make in the next decade and it’s surrounding the number one position on the football field. THE QUARTERBACK!

Well as history has played out, the last time the 49ers were in this position they made the wrong choice. Yes, I know the recently retired Alex Smith had a 15-year career in the NFL but have you seen what the “other” quarterback in that draft the 49ers were looking to take has done over those same 15 years?

How about lead his team to a Super Bowl, win three MVP’s, become a nine time Pro Bowler and three time All-Pro team member. Post a career record of 126 wins versus 63 losses, and oh, by the way, become one of the greatest to ever play the position. I would think everyone in the world would say Aaron Rodgers has had a greater career than Alex Smith.

So, here we are again, the team who chose Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers is at a crossroads at the quarterback position and they are staring straight down the barrel at most likely a choice of three players…

Trey Lance of North Dakota St, Justin Fields of Ohio State and Mac Jones of Alabama.

Doesn’t this feel like Deja Vu?

Isn’t this the same situation this team found itself in, in 2005? On paper, it shouldn’t be for reasons I’ve listed earlier, this team is more prepared and has a tremendously better roster than the 2005 version of the 49ers but as a fan

I sure can’t help feeling like we’ve seen this storyline before!
