Veteran coach Rex Kalamian–who has twice called Sacramento home–is leaving again.

Kalamian is on his way to Detroit to reconnect with head coach Dwane Casey. Kalamain was with Casey in Toronto from 2015-2018. Kalamian has been an assistant with the Clippers twice, Nuggets, Timberwolves, Thunder, the previously mentioned Raptors and was with the Kings from 2007-2009 and this past season.

Kalamian had served as an assistant coach and was a big part of the defensive schemes for the Kings. Granted the Kings struggled immensely this season on the defensive side of things but this will be the third year in a row with a new coach running the defense.

Two years ago it was Bob Beyer, this past season Rex Kalamian, and the upcoming season will be someone new in charge.

The Kings need to improve in a lot of areas but defense should be the top priority. A new voice and scheme could help but the players also have to buy in to the required commitment it takes to be a good defensive team. The entire roster should be watching the playoffs right now and see what it takes to advance to this point defensively.

The offseason growth will be imperative for the Kings to get that much needed improvement individually and as a team.

They will need to draft well, hit on free agency and each player will need to improve their own individual games. Turnarounds can happen but they don’t happen without a lot of hard work.

The work is going on now and for all of us we will have to wait on the results.
