Olson will be headed to Colorado for his first-ever appearance in the Midsummer Classic
Rejoice, A’s fans: Matt Olson is an All-Star.
The 27-year-old first baseman will be representing the Oakland Athletics when the American League faces the National League on Tuesday, July 13th at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado.
It’s a well-deserved honor for Olson, who has been the heartbeat of the Oakland offense this season.
Through 80 games (339 plate appearances), the first-time All-Star is batting .283 with 20 home runs (T-7th most in MLB) and 53 RBI. Olson’s .552 slugging percentage ranks seventh in the American League, while his .923 on base plus slugging percentage ranks eighth.
Olson is the first member of the Athletics to be named to an All-Star game since Matt Chapman and Liam Hendriks were selected during the 2019 season (game was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic).
Oakland (49-37) is looking to qualify for the postseason for the fourth-straight season, as they enter play on July 6th in a tie with the Tampa Bay Rays for the top American League Wild Card spot. The A’s will open up a three-game series with the first-place Houston Astros on Tuesday afternoon.
The A’s trail Houston in the American League West standings by 3.5 games with 75 games remaining in the season.
