Gruden has resigned from his position amidst swirling reports of controversial comments

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden has resigned from his position, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Gruden had been heavily scrutinized over the weekend following a revelation that the head coach sent several emails containing very harsh language–including homophobic, racist and misogynistic comments–on several occasions dating back to 2011.

According to ESPN, an NFL official declined to confirm the number of emails that were turned over to Raiders owner Mark Davis and team executives. Gruden estimated he was aware of five to seven emails that were flagged by the league.

The 58-year-old informed his staff and Davis of his decision to step down on Monday evening, per the report.

Gruden had six years remaining on his 10-year, $100 million deal.
