SACRAMENTO, Calif. (November 30, 2018) — Republic FC midfielder Adam Moffat announced his retirement on Friday, calling time on a 15-year career that saw him win an MLS Cup, three MLS Eastern Conference Championships, two MLS Supporters’ Shields and two NASL Championships.

“Truly blessed,” said Moffat of his career. “Fifteen years is a long time doing what you love and I know full well that not many people get the opportunities I’ve been afforded. I feel that I accomplished everything I wanted and more, so I’m truly grateful for the love, support and encouragement I have received from my wife, parents and so many others throughout my career.”

Moffat, 32, spent the last two seasons with Republic FC where he made 35 appearances and scored two goals for the Indomitable Club.

“We congratulate Adam on an outstanding career,” said Republic FC General Manager Todd Dunivant. “He was a vital glue within our locker room and provided great leadership throughout his time here in Sacramento. We have no doubt that he will do great things beyond the field of play.”

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Moffat began his career in the lower divisions of the Scottish Football League, first with Ross County and then Elgin City. In 2007, he moved to the U.S. to play for the Cleveland City Stars of the now defunct USL Second Division (USL2).

That same year, he joined Columbus Crew SC where he would go on to lift the MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield in 2008. The midfielder spent a total of eight seasons in the league, making over 130 MLS appearances playing with Crew SC, Portland Timbers, Houston Dynamo, Seattle Sounders FC and FC Dallas.

“I’ve been on a lot of teams and met some amazing people, so those are the things that stick around after you stop playing. I put a lot of value into being a good teammate. The playing part doesn’t last forever, but the relationships you build do, so I always wanted to treat everyone equally and be someone they enjoy seeing every day and a positive influence.”
“I believe a lot of the success I’ve had comes from that and I was fortunate to be on several successful teams and play in lots of big games in my career. I also scored a few decent goals I’m proud of,” he joked.

Moffat went on to play two seasons with the NASL’s New York Cosmos from 2015-16 where he scored 10 goals across 47 appearances en route to two consecutive championships. He then joined Republic FC ahead of the 2017 season.

“I absolutely loved my time with Sacramento Republic and although injuries hampered my two years here, I enjoyed the people involved in the organization and the players I played with.”

Although he won’t be taking the pitch at Papa Murphy’s Park anymore, Republic FC fans will still see a familiar face around town.

“We love this city and have felt so connected since moving here, so it was any easy decision that this was where we want to settle and raise our three kids.”

“I’m training kids in the Folsom/El Dorado Hills area and enjoying it, and my wife is heavily involved with her Job at Fit4Mom Folsom Lake, so we will be in the area. I look forward to bringing my kids to the games next year and cheering on the team from the side.”
