It’s been a strange season for the San Antonio Spurs and all-star Kawhi Leonard to say the least. First off, this season is shaping up to be the first under-50 win year since 1999. Secondly, Leonard has been suffering from a perplexing quad injury that has kept him sidelined for all but nine games this season.
More and more reports had surfaced over the past few months about a disconnect between Leonard and the Spurs organization, mainly focused on the handling of the injury. Those reports led to mass speculation about a potential breakup between both parties, especially with Leonard approaching eligibility for the NBA super-max contract.
Earlier today, Leonard silenced a lot of the speculation:
“I don’t feel like nothing was friction. I talk to (Gregg Popovich) every day. He knows what the progression were. He knew what I was doing the whole entire time, as well as the front office. We made a group decision, so it was me just going out and saying, ‘I am going to go out and do this thing.’ ”
Leonard also told reporters that he wishes to finish his career in San Antonio.
There is no set return date, but Leonard is confident and hopeful that it will be very soon. Definitely before the start of the NBA Playoffs.
