Former San Francisco 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. has expressed interest in buying the Carolina Panthers, according to Sports Illustrated.

Debartolo has released a statement to Tampa Bay Times reporter Rick Stroud saying he is waiting until the season is over to further discuss his position on the Panthers bid.

After being accused of sexual harassment and racial insensitivity by team employees, Panthers owner Jerry Richardson announced on Sunday that he would be putting the team up for sale at the end of the season.

DeBartolo’s father bought the Niners in 1977 then passed the control over to him.

He turned the 49ers into one of the most dominant franchises in the NFL, until he was forced to pull out onced accusations arose that he paid Louisiana governor $400k to get a gambling license approved.

Debartolo’s sister gained control of the team in 2000 then later passed the Niners over to her son, Jen York.

The Panthers are the first NFL team to hit the market since 2014. The Panthers franchise is said to be valued at $2.3 billion.
