California Football Head Coach Justin Wilcox was reportedly a contender to Oregon’s vacancy at the same position up north due to his history with Eugene.

He was born and raised in the town and even attended University of Oregon, playing as defensive back from ’96-99 before graduating.

However, after it was confirmed that the team signed co-offensive coordinator Mario Cristobal, Wilcox told reporters that he never had plans to walk away from the Bay Area.

Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports reported the news Friday morning.

Bouncing around between various teams since beginning his college coaching career in 2001, Wilcox landed his first head coaching job this past offseason when he signed with Cal.

In his first season in Berkeley, he led the Golden Bears to a 5-7 record with wins over North Carolina, Ole Miss, and #8 Washington State, and three losses by three points or fewer.

He is currently the 34th head coach of Cal’s Football program.
