We’re coming up on Week 6 and so far in the NFL season, quarterback play has been at a high level. From the top tier quarterbacks all the way to rookie quarterbacks, the NFL has seen a jump up in the overall quality of play from the most important position on the field. Here are the top five so far:
5. Phillip Rivers (1,495 yards, 13 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, 116.4 rating)
In his age 37 season, Rivers is on pace to have the best season of his career. If he continues playing at the pace he’s on, he will set new career-highs in touchdowns, passer rating, and completion percentage and a new career low for interceptions thrown. Rivers has lead the Chargers to a 3-2 record with wins over the Bills, 49ers, and Raiders.
4. Matt Ryan (1,601 yards, 11 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, 110.9 rating)
Coming off of a disappointing 2017 season, Ryan looks to be returning to his MVP form from 2016. After a tough Week 1 loss against the Eagles where the Falcons quarterback struggled, Ryan has returned to form throwing for 11 touchdowns and just one interception the past four weeks. Unfortunately for Ryan and the Falcons, their defense has allowed the most points in the league, leading Atlanta to their 1-4 record.
3. Patrick Mahomes (1,513 yards, 14 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, 112.7 rating)
Mahomes was the darling of the early season but has come back down to earth after throwing for 13 touchdowns the first three weeks. Mahomes has still been solid and has been playing at an elite level. The Chiefs are one of the two remaining undefeated teams in the league and Mahomes is a large part of that.
2. Jared Goff (1,727 yards, 12 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 119.7 rating)
After a career-year last season, Goff has continued his great play early this season. Out of the five quarterbacks on this list, Goff has the fewest pass attempts but leads the NFL in passing yards. The Rams are the other team with an undefeated record and while their defense is what makes this team as good as they are, Goff’s ability to stretch the field has made the Rams offense almost as good as their defense.
1. Drew Brees (1,658 yards, 11 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 122.3 rating)
Brees is cemented as one of the greatest quarterbacks off all-time but even in his age 39 season, Brees has shown he is still a top tier quarterback. His 122.3 passer rating and 77.9 completion percentage leads the NFL. Brees has the Saints sitting at a 4-1 record, which puts the Saints in first place in the NFC South.
