This story could be about Patrick Mahomes continuing his hot start to the season, torching the 49ers to the tune of three touchdowns and 314 yards in the Chiefs 38-27 victory on Sunday.
This story could be about the 49ers holding the Chiefs to three points in the second half, giving themselves a chance to get within one score late in the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately, the story is about the health of franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and his knee.
With 5:55 left in the game trailing 38-24 on a 3rd and goal from the 20-yard line, Garoppolo would roll to the left and scramble for about twelve yards and attempt to cut back towards the middle of the field for more yardage when his left knee would buckle and he would go down following a hit from Steven Nelson. Garoppolo was slow to get up and ultimately had to be carted off to the locker room.
“With Jimmy, we’re fearing ACL,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told the media after the game. “We’ll find out tomorrow. I haven’t had a chance to talk to him yet. I feel for him.” Garoppolo is scheduled for an MRI on Modnay and left Arrowhead Stadium on crutches.

CJ Beathard would be the quarterback to replace Garoppolo assuming the 49ers don’t sign somebody this week to take over the starting role. In his rookie season last year, Beathard played in seven games, starting in five, and threw for 1,430 yards with four touchdowns and six interceptions. The 49ers were 1-4 in games he started.
- Richard Sherman also has an MRI scheduled for Monday after leaving the game on Sunday with a left leg injury. It is unsure if it is a calf or heel injury.
- Matt Breida had another good game with ten carries for 90 yards, bringing his season total to 274 yards. He too had an injury scare early in the game but would return.
- Marquise Goodwin returned Sunday after missing last weeks game against the Lions. He was targeted four times for three receptions and a touchdown.
- Reuben Foster made his 2018 debut after serving his two game suspension and finished the game with six tackles.
The 49ers head to Los Angeles in Week 4 to take on the Chargers. The Chargers are 1-1 on the season and played the Rams in the late game on Sunday.
